A month into the fall high school season is a good time to take a look at the Oregon School Activities Organization rankings, which are so important to the postseason. Here are some of the storylines and rankings as of Sunday.
Football
McNary is atop the Mountain Valley Conference at 4-0 overall and 1-0 in league play. However, they are No. 14 in the OSAA Class 6A rankings.
Why?
A big reason is that the Celtics’ opponents have struggled. McNary’s three non-conference opponents — South Medford, Newberg and Grants Pass — are a combined 1-11.
At the 5A level, Silverton (No. 2) and McKay (No. 7) are in the top 10, as is Cascade (No. 6) in the 4A level, Kennedy (No. 3) at the 2A level and St. Paul (No. 5) at the 1A level.
Volleyball
South Salem and West Salem are off to strong starts this season.
The Saxons are 10-3 and ranked No. 5 at the 6A level, and the Titans are 12-3 and ranked No. 10.
At the 5A level, Silverton (No. 7) and Dallas (No. 9) are in the top 10, as is Cascade (No. 2) in 4A, Scio (No. 5) and Amity (No. 8) in 3A, Salem Academy (No. 2) in 2A and St. Paul (No. 3) in 1A.
Boys soccer
Stayton is off to a perfect start at 10-0 and is the top-ranked team in 4A.
Cascade (No. 10) is also ranked in the top 10 at the 4A level.
At the 6A level, West Salem (No. 9) is ranked in the top 10, as is Silverton (No. 4) and North Salem (No. 7) in 5A.
Girls soccer
Sprague is off to a fast start at 5-1-1 and is ranked No. 7 at the 6A level.
In 4A, Woodburn is No. 10, and at 3A/2A/1A, Dayton is No. 2.
