If you’re like me, you may have grown up enjoying an assortment of frozen treats from the local grocery store.

For our family, this meant orange push-pops, purple popsicles, and tubs of ice cream!

One of the things I love about the Ninja Creami machine is the ability to make such a wide variety of desserts, from homemade ice cream to decadent milkshakes and refreshing sorbets.

It’s so much fun to make small batches of these treats, so we always have several options to choose from whenever a craving strikes.

So I knew I wanted to make a delicious Ninja Creami orange sorbet to rival a push-pop, and that’s how this easy recipe was born!

Making Ninja Creami Orange Sorbet with Jell-O®

The great thing about the Ninja Creami ice cream maker is the ability to make treats with ingredients you might not normally use in a traditional ice cream machine.

For instance, I’ve made Ninja Creami mango sorbet, spiced pear sorbet, and peach sorbet–all using canned fruit!

I’ve made cinnamon apple sorbet using applesauce.

I’ve also made cherry limeade sorbet and berry lemonade sorbet using canned pie filling.

So when I started experimenting with Ninja Creami recipes using pudding mix, I knew I wanted to try using gelatin mix, too.

I’m happy to say that it works quite well!

The gelatin mix not only provides flavor, but it gives sweetness as well, creating a treat that’s both delicious AND easy.

Yes, you could make orange sorbet with canned mandarin oranges, but that gives a slightly different flavor profile.

And although my Ninja Creami orange sherbet is super popular, it uses whole milk and heavy cream.

It’s like an orange creamsicle ice cream, so I wanted to make a dairy-free orange sorbet as another option.

How to Make Ninja Creami Orange Sorbet

It’s quite easy to whip up a batch of this orange sorbet, with just two basic ingredients!

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • Apple juice
  • Orange gelatin mix, such as Jell-O® brand

How to Make it:

Dissolve the gelatin mix.Pour 1 cup of juice into a microwave-safe bowl or large measuring cup. Microwave for about 90 seconds, or until very hot and near-boiling.

Add the orange gelatin mix to the hot juice and whisk until dissolved.

Add the remaining 3/4 cup of juice and whisk to incorporate. Pour the mixture into a Ninja Creami pint container, being careful not to exceed the max fill line.

Freeze.Place the lid on the pint container and transfer to a level surface in your freezer. Freeze for at least 24 hours.

Process.Remove the pint from the freezer and take off the lid. Place pint into the outer bowl of the machine and secure the outer bowl lid.

Place outer bowl apparatus into the Ninja Creami ice cream machine and lock into place.

Press the Sorbet button and allow the cycle to complete.

Re-Spin if needed.Remove the pint from the machine.

If the sorbet is crumbly, or if any icy areas have accumulated on the inner wall of the pint container, use a butter knife or spoon to scrape down the ice.

Insert the pint back into the machine and press the Re-spin button to process it again.

Afterward, it should have a nice, creamy texture.

Notes and Adaptations:

  • I have tried this method without heating the juice first, and although the flavor is still fantastic, the texture is very slightly gritty, due to the sugar. If you don’t mind that (we didn’t!), you can skip the process of heating the juice. But if you want it nice and smooth, dissolving the gelatin in hot juice does the trick.
  • I have not tested this recipe with sugar-free gelatin mix.
  • I used apple juice, but you could use white grape juice if you’d like.
  • You can use water instead of juice, if preferred, but I find the extra sweetness from the juice really enhances the orange flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cup apple juice (or water)
  • 3-oz package orange gelatin mix, such as Jell-O® brand

Instructions

  1. Add 1 cup of apple juice (or water) to a small microwave-safe bowl or large liquid measuring cup. Microwave until almost boiling (I heated mine in the microwave for about 90 seconds to get it very hot).
  2. Add orange gelatin mix to the hot liquid and whisk well to dissolve.
  3. Add remaining 3/4 cup of apple juice (or water) and whisk to combine.
  4. Pour mixture into a Ninja Creami pint container. Close the lid and transfer to a level surface in your freezer. Freeze for at least 24 hours.
  5. Remove pint container and take off the lid. Place pint into the outer bowl and close the outer bowl lid.
  6. Secure the outer bowl apparatus in the Ninja Creami machine. Press the Sorbet button and allow the cycle to complete.
  7. Remove the pint and check the texture of the sorbet. If it appears crumbly, you can insert it back into the machine and use the Re-spin button. If it's still crumbly after that, add 1 tablespoon of juice or water to the pint and Re-spin again.
