Do you know how to make Stromboli? With this step-by-step Stromboli recipe, you’ll be an expert on making this pizza-inspired appetizer!

But First, What is Stromboli?

Now, do you know what Stromboli is? I was first introduced to this magnificent appetizer when I worked as a server at Boston Pizza. They had these on the menu {along with these} and I became obsessed with them. SO yummy and one of the most popular items on the menu.

In a nutshell, stromboli is basically a pizza roll. You roll the pizza dough out into a rectangle, cover with sauce, top with meat and cheese, roll up, cut in some slats, bake and serve. Super simple and totally do-able for the home cook! When you make these, people will think you’re a rock star because they are so good.

Honestly, this is just a different way to eat pizza. People go nuts over this because it’s something they don’t see every day. Pizza is just plain ol’ pizza. But stromboli! Well, you just became 16 times cooler because you served this instead of pizza at your Superbowl party. Shall we make some? Okay!

Stromboli Recipe Ingredients

For this stromboli recipe, I used a more traditional set of ingredients. Salami, ham, mozzarella, and parmesan!

However, just like pizza, you can customize it to your liking. Spinach, artichoke, olives, sun-dried tomatoes, chicken, pepperoni, and sausage are all different ingredients you can experiment with!

How to Make Stromboli

With these step-by-step photos, this recipe is super easy to make. So for full details, including increments, on how to make this stromboli recipe, see the recipe card down below!

  1. Start out by spreading your pizza dough out into a rectangle on a baking sheet. I used my Fail-Proof Pizza Dough Recipe because it is in fact fail-proof. And I also used parchment paper because I didn’t want to have to clean my baking sheet after this hot mess was done baking. Lazy Mom’s unite! Feel free to use the straight-up pan.

  1. Spread pizza sauce over most of the dough, leaving a 3-inch border. I use Prego marinara because it’s way cheaper than a teeny tiny bottle of actual pizza sauce.

  1. Grate some cheese, please! And sprinkle half over the top of the sauce. Keep that plain, sauce-less dough alone! No touchy!

  1. Now fish around your fridge for some meat. I used my pepperoni up without realizing it so I used salami. Lay those slices out over the cheese.

How to Serve

Wait a few minutes before you slice and serve. And beware of all that raging ooey-gooey cheese. Right out of the oven it’s hotter than the fires of hell. So, watch yourself.

Serve this stromboli recipe with extra sauce if you feel so inclined. It’s about at this time people start worshiping the ground you walk on because these are so doggone good.

FAQs

Why is my stromboli raw in the middle? ›

Once you have put your stromboli or calzone together, it is important to put them in the refrigerator for 15-30 minutes before baking. This will give the dough time to seal and slowly proof so that it does not remain raw inside.

Why is my stromboli soggy? ›

To prevent stromboli from becoming soggy you need to make sure to cut the slits in the top of the stromboli. This will let the steam escape while it bakes.

How do you keep stromboli from exploding? ›

Slits. Before going into the oven, use a knife to make slits across the stromboli about every 2 inches. This prevents it from exploding in the oven, so this is definitely an important step that you don't want to forget.

What is the difference between calzone and stromboli? ›

A calzone features a circle of dough that's folded in half over the filling and sealed by crimping, like a pasty or empanada. A stromboli starts with a rectangular piece of dough that's then topped with add-ins and cheese, rolled up lengthwise and sealed by folding and pressing the extra dough over the edges.

Should stromboli have sauce inside? ›

Calzones never have tomato sauce inside the dough. They're always dipped. While stromboli is also dip-able, it's totally cool to put some sauce inside stromboli, pre-roll.

Why does my stromboli split? ›

The dough needs to be thick enough to support the weight of the toppings. Otherwise, your homemade stromboli will break apart when you try to seal it. Got ooze? Some toppings or oils from the meats may seep up and out of the slits in the dough, but don't panic!

Can stromboli be reheated? ›

While leftover stromboli can be eaten cold (you might like it this way if you love cold pizza), it is tastier when warmed up. The method you choose to bring back the perfect crispiness to your stromboli is important. The best way to reheat next day, leftover stromboli for an easy lunch is in the air fryer.

Can you prepare stromboli the night before? ›

You can build your stromboli up to 24 hours in advance of baking and keep it tightly wrapped on a baking sheet in the fridge until baking time. Once you're ready to bake, let the stromboli sit at room temperature while the oven heats. Bake the stromboli until golden-brown, 20 to 25 minutes.

How do you stop a stromboli from leaking? ›

Wrap dough to cover ingredients, pinching and sealing edges to prevent leakage; brush top with egg white.

What is a real stromboli? ›

Does a stromboli have ricotta cheese? ›

As a tightly rolled baked good with sauce inside, stromboli can't contain too much moisture. If the fillings are too wet, the dough could become soggy and unappetizing. This is why stromboli isn't made with a wet cheese like ricotta.

How do you fix uncooked bread in the middle? ›

In most situations, an undercooked loaf of bread can be fixed by returning it to the oven for a few more minutes. This is true for loaves where the outside of your bread may look fully set, but the inside of the bread is still gummy. Place the loaf back in a preheated oven at 350° F for 10-20 minutes.

Why is the center of my pizza not cooking? ›

This problem occurs when the oven is not fully preheated, or the pizza is not cooked at the correct temperature. Always ensure the oven has plenty of time to preheat and is at the proper temperature.

Why did my pizza come out doughy? ›

Doughy pizza caused by low heat

Even if your pizza dough is properly proved, a low temperature oven can lead to a doughy pizza. The high temperature of a pizza oven creates an effect called “oven spring”.
