“One Piece” Episode 1071 Explained: Gear 5 Luffy’s Debut (2024)

Years passed, but one question was always floating around the internet: When will Gear 5 Luffy be animated? Fans were eager to see this epic form and have been finally blessed.

One Piece episode 1071 was released a few hours ago and has created unreal hype. The debut of Gear 5 Luffy might be one of the greatest moments in anime history.

While manga fans aren’t surprised by the information released in this singular epic episode, anime-only fans are astonished.

You might have many questions, and here’s me trying to provide answers.

Episode 1071 was released on 6 August 2023 and unveiled a load of information. Fans finally got to witness Gear 5 Luffy animated, and the Gorosei has revealed the secrets of Gomu Gomu no Mi.

Is Luffy Joyboy?

While many of us have assumed that Joyboy was a person and Luffy might be a reincarnation of the said person, it is not the case. Joy Boy is an inherited will, much like the will of the original D. Joy Boy stands for liberation, freedom, joy, laughter, and love. It is everything Luffy embodies.

The inheritance of the title is also related to him awakening his historical Devil Fruit, the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika. In Gear 5 form, Luffy is also called Sun God Nika.

What is Zunesha’s connection to Joyboy?

In the previous episode, we saw Luffy lose a bout with Kaido and was knocked unconscious after Gear 4. His “voice” vanished, and for the first time, Luffy is considered “dead.”

Just as all hope is lost, Luffy’s heartbeat can be heard by Zunesha, who compares it to the “Drums of Liberation.” Zunesha seems nostalgic about Joyboy as he was once Joy Boy’s friend.

Why is the World Government after Gomu Gomu no Mi?

The connection between Joy Boy and Sun God Nika is through Luffy’s Devil Fruit, known by the world as the Paramecia-type Gomu Gomu no Mi, or the Gum-Gum fruit.

The Gorosei, or the 5 Elders, reveal that the Gum-Gum fruit’s original name is the Human-Human fruit, Model: Nika; that is to say, that the Paramecia-type Gomu Gomu no Mi is the Mythical Zoan-type Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika.

They have reclassified the fruit as a Paramecia type to hide its secrets from the people. The Gorosei also confirm that the user of this Devil Fruit can take on the attributes of the Sun God Nika, namely, a body with all the properties of rubber, giving him the versatility to fight in whatever way he fancies.

This Zoan fruit threatened the World Government as Joyboy would bring down their rule.

How did Luffy Deflect Kaido’s Bolo Breath back at him?

In his Gear 5 form, Luffy’s rubbery nature can be extended into the environment around him. He was able to stretch a section of the ground and used it to bounce Kaidou’s Bolo Breath back at him.

Interestingly, the altered terrain, while elastic, was neither burnt nor melted by the Bolo Breath. This means that the terrain was rendered the powers of rubber as well.

Will Kaido be defeated?

Kaido overpowered Luffy on several occasions. However, now that Luffy has awakened his Devil Fruit, he has gained a unique ability to move however he pleases. This awakening puts Kaido at a disadvantage.

Kaido was defeated by Luffy as the people of Wano looked on and celebrated. And Momo has taken on the mantle of the Kozuki Clan.
