February is National Grapefruit Month. I’m going to show you how to love it and start eating it with some simple grapefruit breakfast ideas. Grapefruit can be bitter, but understanding how to cut the bitter taste will allow you to start enjoying it every day. Dole grapefruit was nice enough to send me some of my favoriteDOLE Red Grapefruit Sunrise Fruit Bowls so I could share these tips and recipes with you.
How to cut the bitter taste of grapefruit:
There are four major tastes in food; sweetness, sourness, saltiness, and bitterness. Sour is the opposite complement to salt and bitter is the opposite complement of sweet. Now grapefruit is a bit of an odd bird in this equation because it’s considered to be bitter-sour. Tocut the bitterness in grapefruit, you can add something sweet or salty to it.
- add cane sugar or brown sugar to it
- drizzle honey on it
- sprinkle salt on it
- mix it with other sweet fruits like bananas, strawberries, kiwi, or mango
Where to get grapefruit year round:
Fresh grapefruit from Florida is peak season in January and February but honestly, I am not a fan of peeling or digging out slices of grapefruit. I’m not a morning person so for me it’s just best to take the easy route on this one. Lucky for me, I can enjoy my grapefruit year-round withDolesingle-serve fruit cups.New DOLE Red Grapefruit Sunrise Fruit Bowls are packed in 100% juice while other fruit cups usually contain fruit in syrup or artificial sweeteners. DOLE Red Grapefruit contains nothing but the fruit in 100% fruit juice. How can you go wrong the number one selling fruit cup? It’s as close to tree picked as you can get and so much faster and easier!

Just wanted to share an old 'country folk' tip. You don't need to add sugar, or anything to a grapefruit. The bitterness you taste is only from the membrane, ie the skin that segments the fruit pulp into the individual wedges. You cut the top and bottom off the grapefruit, pull it open, then carefully split each wedge open and scoop the pulp out. Then be sure to wash your hands really well. This method makes such a difference in the way it tastes!
