  • MATERIALSCarbon Steel

Carbon steel is used in themanufacture of Cooper B-Linepipehangers and supports. Excellentstrength characteristicsandadaptability to cold forming provide awel engineered design. Bycoldforming the steel, mechanicalproperties are increased, addingtothe structural integrity of thefabricated hanger.

    Stainless Steel

AISI Type 304 and Type 316 arenon-magnetic members oftheaustenitic stainless steel group.Several conditions make the useofstainless steel ideal. These includereducing long termmaintenancecosts, high ambient temperatures, appearance, and stablestructuralproperties such as yield strength, and high creepresistance.

CORROSIONAll metal surfaces exposed to theenvironment areaffected bycorrosion. Depending on the physicalproperties of themetal and itsproximity to other dissimilar metals, anelectrochemical reaction mayoccur which causes an attack onthemetal itself, resulting in corrosion.Chemical corrosion islimited tohighly corrosive environments, hightemperatures, or acombination ofboth.

    FINISHESZinc Coatings

Protective zinc coatings are availableon a number of pipehangers andaccessories in three basic forms:

but is suitable for extended exposure indry or mildly corrosiveatmospheres.

    Hot-Dip Galvanized AfterFabrication (ASTM A 123)

After a pipe hanger or fitting has beenfabricated, it iscompletely immersed ina bath of molten zinc. A metallurgicalbond isformed, resulting in a zinccoating that completely coatsallsurfaces, including edges. Zinccoatings of this specificationhave aminimum thickness of 1.50 ounces persquare foot (0.45 kg/m2)on each sideor a total of 3.0 ounces per square foot(0.9 kg/m2) ofsteel.Hot-dip galvanized after fabrication isrecommended foroutdoor exposure. For best results, a zinc rich paint(available fromCooper B-Line) shouldbe applied to field cuts. The zinc richpaintwill provide immediate protectionfor field cuts and eliminate theshorttime period for galvanic action to "heal"the damagedcoating.

    Plastic Coating

Some products offered by CooperB-Line are plastic or vinylcoated for prevention of galvanic reaction betweenmaterials or fornoise reduction. Thesecoated products can also be usedwhere contactbetween glass pipe andhanger is not desirable. Felt linedhangersmay be substituted for samepurpose.

    Red Primer

A corrosion resistant metal primercontaining rust inhibitivepigments.

Electro-Plated Zinc, Pre-Galvanized,and Hot-Dip GalvanizedAfterFabrication. In all cases, the zincprotects the steel first asa sacrificialanode to repair bare areas on cutedges and gouges.Whenexposed to air and moisture, zinc forms a tough, adherentprotectivefilm consisting of a mixture of zincoxides, hydroxides, and carbonates. The corrosion resistance of zinc isdirectly relatedto its thickness and theenvironment. For example a 0.2 mil(5 m)coating will last twice as longas a 0.1 mil (2.5 m) coating inthesame environment.

    Electro-Plated Zinc(ASTM B 633 SC1 or SC3)

An Electro-Plated process depositsa coating of zinc on the steelbyelectrolysis from a bath of zinc salts. This coating is pure zincand adheresto the steel with a molecular bond. Amaximum of 0.5 mils(12.7 m) of zinccan be applied by this method. Thiscoating isrecommended for in-dooruse in relatively dry areas.

    Pre-Galvanized Zinc(ASTM A 653 CoatingDesignation G90)

Pre-galvanized zinc is produced bycontinuously rolling the steelcoils orsheets through molten zinc at the steelmills. This is alsoknown as "mill-galva-nized" or "hot-dipped mill galvanized".Coilsare then slit to size for fabricationof pipe hangers. Coatingthicknessesof G90, is 0.90 ounces per square foot(0.27 kg/m2) ofsteel surface.

Cut edges and welded areas are not zinc coated; however, zincnear theuncoated metal becomes a sacrificial anode which protectsthebare areas after a short period of time.Pre-galvanized steel isnot generally recommended for use outdoors in industrialenvironments,

Protection of cut edges with zinc coatings.

  • General InformationTorque

The torque values in this catalog are to be used as a guideonly. The relationship between the applied torque ortorque wrenchreading and the actual tension created in the bolt may besubstantially different. Important factorsaffecting torque-tensionrelationships include friction under the bolt head or nut, holetolerances, and torquewrench tolerances. Accuracy of manycommercial torque wrenches may vary as much as plus or minus25%.

    SALT SPRAY TEST RESULTS

    (1) All salt spray (fog) tests conducted in accordance with ASTMB 117-73 and evaluated and ratedaccording to ASTM D 1654-79 Tables1 & 2. Tests were performed and certified by an independenttesting laboratory.

    Dura-Copper and Dura-Green Epoxy Coatings

Dura-Copper and Dura-Green arewater borne epoxy coatings appliedtoCooper B-Line products by a preciselycontrolled cathodicelectro-depositionprocess. This process is accomplishedusing aconveyor to transport partsthrough several cleaning, phosphatizingand application stages prior to beingbaked (Seediagram below). This custom designed paint system isused forpainting all copper paintedhanger parts and all greenchannel, slotted angle and fittings.

Samples are selected on a routinebasis for Salt Spray (fog)testing toverify the quality of the finish. Thesetests areperformed in accordance withASTM B 117-73 and evaluated andratedaccording to ASTM D 1654-79(Tables 1 & 2). The Dura-CopperandDura-Green Epoxy coatings havebeen tested and listed byUnderwritersLaboratories in accordance with"Standard for PipeHanger Equipmentfor Fire Protection Service, UL 203"and meet orexceed all requirements ofFederal Specification TT-C-490BParagraph3.

Pipe hangers offered in this section are designed to supportinsulated or non-insulated pipe allowing for verticaladjustment andlimited movement in the piping system.

MaterialsCarbon Steel, Malleable Iron and AISI Type 304 &316 Stainless Steel are used in the manufacturing of pipehangers.Other materials are available.

FinishesThe standard finishes for mechanical supports are plainsteel (oil coated) sometimes referred to as black,Electro-PlatedZinc (ASTM B 633 SC3), Pre-Galvanized (ASTM A 653 G90), Hot-DipGalvanized After Fabrication(ASTM A123), Red Primer, PlasticCoating, Dura-Green, Dura-Copper and other special coatings areavailableupon request.

Note: Due to the design of some products, (threads, connectinghardware, swivels, etc.) items may or may notbe uniformly coatedwith special finishes i.e. Hot-Dip Galvanized, Dura Green, DuraCopper, PVC etc. In somecases, the hanger itself may be coated, however, the hardware may be supplied Electro-Plated, DuraCopperPainted or Stainless Steel. Consult B-Line Systems foravailability.

Approvals (as noted)Items in this section are UnderwritersLaboratories Listed, comply with Federal Specification WW-H-171E& A-A-1192A or Manufacturers' Standardization Society MSS SP-69& SP-58.
