Since 2012, it has been increasingly difficult for young baseball players ~ and their parents ~ to choose the right metal bat. Continuing our ongoing effort to help, we took a deep look at sticks specifically certified for youth baseball play: those with the USA Baseball stamp, or USABat.
For our peek at the best USA Baseball bats for 2024 and years immediately following, we looked not only at the newest models with all the best bells and whistles; we also inspected bats to meet a variety of needs, like most affordable, for tee-ball, and more.
In modern baseball play, USA Baseball bats are called that due to the stamp on them indicating the stick has met the standards for the USA Baseball organization, which is the national governing organization for baseball in the United States.
The certifications, called “USABat,” (or sometimes USA Bat) are required for bats in youth baseball leagues below the high school level.
USABat standards are for youth baseball bats, to ensure a wood-like performance for non-wood bats (e.g. metal bats, which includes aluminum, alloy, composite, etc).
Differences Between Youth and BBCOR Baseball Bat Standards
High school and college baseball programs require another bat standard stamp, that of the Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution, or BBCOR. This standard focuses more on what is called the trampoline effect, with the strength of older players in mind.
Both these standards were established a couple of decades ago due to injuries out on baseball fields related to balls flying too fast off the stick for fielders to react to. Literally kids were being killed by head shots.
Regarding these standards, it’s typical for young players (or the parents of these little ballplayers) to ask about what they mean. We’ll try to provide information on that, too.

USA Baseball Standard for Metal Baseball Bats
With few exceptions (like single-piece wood bats), all youth baseball leagues before high school and college must be stamped as certified under USA Baseball standards. This stamp usually can be seen above the bat handle, or on the tapering part of the bat where the handle and barrel meld.
In this article, we consider only bats that are specifically marketed as USA Baseball-allowed by the manufacturer, or clearly indicate the stamp in images.
Standards like USA Baseball and BBCOR were established for safety, primarily, but also to ensure baseball games are not dominated by the long ball and every kid swinging for fences.
These standards curb the technological ability of bats to perform better than normal wooden bats, ensuring young players learn all facets of hitting including making contact.
Besides the level of play each set of standards is geared for (e.g. youth vs. school-level), the big difference between BBCOR and USA Baseball bats is size in terms of weight distribution. The BBCOR-stamped bats are heavier, all with a drop weight of -3. That’s not a big weight-reducer off the stick. (More information about drop weight is below).
On the other hand, a USABat does not have a limit on drop weight, so players can choose how light they want their stick to be. Typical drop weights for USABat-stamped sticks are -12, -10, -8, and -5. The bigger the number (e.g. -12 here) the lighter the bat.

What to Look for in a Good USABat
First off, look for the USABat stamp on the stick, usually at the top of the handle or on the transition area between handle and barrel. (They are not stamped on the barrel because during use it would wear off ~ something you do not want with bats for school ages and younger!).
So, find the USABat stamped on the stick, or see that it’s mentioned in its marketing materials if ordering online, and then consider:
- Brand. Well-established and recognized bat manufacturers like Louisville Slugger, Rawlings, and Easton built a history in this market well before metal-bat standards were introduced. These sporting goods companies have a record to review testimonials from users.
We should note that it’s not fatal to try a model from a new brand, and new baseball bat models can surprise you ~ even overwhelm hitters with satisfaction. However, new models tend to be priced lower to gain traction in the market, and as such the manufacturer has limited funding for research and development, which means basically that you’ll get what you pay for.
Additionally, established brands are more apt to offer solid warranties, which for this type of product is a key sales attraction point. Bats take a beating all the time, being clobbered by a hard object over and over again. You get peace of mind going with a known, established brand that has had the opportunity to tweak models to make them last and perform better.
- Type. Bats come in 1-piece, which means the entirety of it is made of a single piece of material; or 2-piece or multi-piece, which means the handle and barrel are different, with a connection point. Then there are materials used. Bats called composite typically are used by players focused on making contact and not striking out. - Reviews. Confused by all the marketing talks and things like exit speed? More important is information from actual users. See what people who have hit baseballs with the bat have to say about their experience.
- Warranties. User reviews usually make you aware of potential red flags with bat models; but none or few will surface for the very best baseball bats. In such instances, look for whether or not a model has a warranty ~ basically confidence from the manufacturer in the bat’s durability.
- Other details. USABats are for players below school level, meaning high school or college. The younger the player, the less likely they will know minutiae about what they really want in a bat, like a thin (or thick) handle, the grip, or a certain weight ratio. Seemingly minor details like a super-thick handle, or vibration-resistant end cap, could be very attractive for young baseball players. Sometimes players prefer not having their hands hurt after contact, over supernatural ability to hit a baseball far.
- Listen. Notice a player always shaking hands after striking a ball? In such cases it might be smart to prioritize things like special end caps or a soft knob, to avoid too much vibration. If a player seems to be tardy on the swing often, maybe try a lighter stick. Pay attention to your player, and how he or she is performing.
Often, marketing content for baseball bats provide clues into what the manufacturer hopes to deliver with the product. The best baseball bat-makers research extensively, and apply what they learn into new models. It should be quite clear whether a bat is designed specifically for contact or power, or for comfort over bat speed. Hint: The product description often repeats it.

Metal Baseball Bat Information You Need
Lists of the very best baseball bats change quite often, because bat-makers keep coming up with new features and advancements that matter. Big brands, especially, are known to compete hard to deliver fancy new models.
You may find lower prices for baseball bat models released in 2022 or before ~ and that’s fine! It’s a way to save some money. However, top bat-makers every year insert elements of new technology that can certainly give some new bat models considerable advantages.
Reminder: multiple-piece baseball bats can be made of entirely different materials, like a composite handle yet aluminum alloy barrel.
Drop Weight in Baseball: What Negative Numbers on Metal Bats Mean
Bat drop, also known as drop weight, is a measurement of the difference between a bat’s weight and length. Drop weight is the length of the bat (measured in inches) subtracted from the weight (measured in ounces).
For example, a bat is 33 inches long and 31 ounces in weight, so the drop weight is negative 2 (31 − 33 = −2). This bat would be called a “drop 2,” noted as a negative number, e.g. -2.
All BBCOR-certified baseball bats have a drop weight of -3. USA baseball bats do not have a drop 3 weight-to-length ratio cap like the BBCOR bats. The bigger the negative number (e.g. -12) the lighter the swing, which typically means more advantage for the hitter to make contact.
USA Baseball bats are allowed to be lighter than BBCOR bats, by design since they are used by smaller and younger players.
Note: as of Jan. 1, 2018, all USABats made prior to 2018 are illegal. Avoid old bats with this stamp. In fact, ignore any metal baseball bats without any standards stamp whatsoever.
Different Types of USA Baseball Bats
Above, you might have noticed “1-piece” or “2-piece design,” or aluminum alloy, or composite. These are terms used with BBCOR and USA Baseball bats.
It’s simple: a 1-piece design is where all of the bat is made of a single piece of material, without need for a connection point. This single piece can be made of aluminum, or an alloy, or wood. But it must not be 2 pieces connected somehow.
These bats have thinner walls in the barrels and are generally more responsive and powerful.
A 2-piece style makes bats lighter than normal. These bats are more flexible on contact than the 1-piece options. Multi-piece bats are suggested for newer players who need help with bat speed and making contact.
A newer style is a 2-piece design, but each piece being made of a different material, like alloy barrels with a composite handle. This can equate to an even lighter handle.
How USABat Standards are Set
USABat standards are not created in a vacuum. USA Baseball is the national governing body for baseball in the United States. Along with participating national member organizations, USA Baseball has adopted its own method to measure performance in youth bats, through testing.
Renowned scientists serve the USA Baseball Bat Study Committee, supported by national member organizations like the American Amateur Baseball Congress (AABC), Babe Ruth Baseball/Cal Ripken Baseball, Dixie Youth Baseball & Dixie Boys Baseball, Little League Baseball, and PONY Baseball.
With all the research, USA Baseball concluded that advancements in technology, science, engineering, and materials available allows manufacturers to build youth-level metal bats that perform better than a bat made entirely of plain wood.
The USA Baseball bat standard (USABat), which applies to bats that are classified below the NCAA and high school levels of play, was implemented Jan. 1, 2018.
